Additional Food Bank-Backpack Info (PDF)
Project Goals:
The goal of our Phones for Food program is to provide 100 elementary students with a backpack full of food for each weekend during the school year. We have made steps towards these goals. We have been communicating with local/national businesses in order to place backpacks in their facility so their customers and employees can donate their old phones for our cause. We are also focusing on advertising to bring awareness to our program. We will have three ads in the Lincoln Journal Star in order to advertise for the participating businesses.
- Contact local/national businesses to gain partnerships
- Collect and recycle over 3000 used cell phones
- Raise $15,000 to donate to the Backpack Program
- Feed 100 children for a year ($150 a year per child)
- Every $1 in cash buys $6 in food at the Food Bank!
Intended Results
This project will result in feeding 100 elementary students. Collecting 3,000 cell phones that will turn into $15,000 to donate to the Food Bank. We are hoping to make a huge difference within our community, and even more in the lives of students lives we will reach.

How the Month Will Go!
- We will contact large businesses, organizations, and outlets to request an opportunity to place a backpack (donated by Walgreens) and a poster in a prominent location with the business (placing multiple backpacks in multiple locations is an option).
- Prior to January 4th, the Lincoln Journal Star will run a story and an ad will be placed outlining the details of the program and advertising a link to the various business locations where backpacks have been placed.
- On Friday, January 4th, students from our group will go out to each of the businesses they contacted with the backpack, poster, and information sheet with contact info to place the backpacks.
- Businesses are free to contact us at any time (436-1715) and we will contact them around January 15th to make sure things are going well and to get some preliminary numbers (and collect phones if need be).
- On February 1, we will go out to all businesses to pick up the backpacks and thank them for their participation.
- We will try to run a final ad announcing the results of the recycling drive.
